A gust of wind howled though the trees, ruffling my blond hair as I stared at out into the darkness.
Angel let out a low whimper. I automatically started petting her oddly golden fur.
“It’s okay nothing in the woods will hurt us.” I mumbled absently. Latter I would come to realize how wrong I was.
With a sigh I got up and decided it was time to head back home. “Come angel, let go home”
Walking to our house, Angel’s eyes kept darting around. It reminded me of when my brother first found her in the woods and gave her to me. She was just a skinny little pup then.
There was another gust of wind and I tighten my jacket around myself. “You can really tell its fall cant ya, girl.” I smile down at my nervous little wolf-dog.
The air became chilled as the moon reached its peak, my breath started coming out in little puffs. I quickened my pace, with Angel stayed right on my heels. The cabin finally came into sight. “Shelby must have started a fire,” I noted out loud, seeing the smoke rise from the chimney.
Shelby was the average protective older brother, even if he was only 5 minutes older. He always was taking care of me. I was a bit of a dreamer and a ditz. Our parent die when we were two, after that we lived with our grandfather. He was so good to us.
After Shelby went away to college for about a year, grandpa had gotten sick. Shelby didn’t make it home before grandpa died. He always blamed himself for not making it back in time to say good bye. We spread grandpa’s ashes around the edge of the woods.
Reaching the door I took a deep breath, trying to pull myself from darker thoughts. as I opened the door I stepped into a medley delicious smells.
“I just finished making dinner, as always your timing is perfect.” My twin smiled at me.
“I thought a smelled something foul” I flashed him my innocent smile.
“Oh, I see. You must smell what I made for myself then.” He said using his innocent smile on me.
I went and flopped on the couch face first. “Okay, I guess I just lay here and starve then.” I said into the old couch.
I turn over to my side to see him carrying over two bowls while laughing. “I don’t know what you said to the couch but I'm sure it was just so pitiful. “
“It was” I beamed up at him and took my favorite bright purple bowl.
When he sat down, he also turned on the TV to some car show; I didn’t bother paying attention to it. I was looking at my twin. He looked so tired. His usually bright blue eyes seem to be dull, and his shaggy blond hair was sticking out in every direction. I even noticed how he wasn't clean shaved like he typically stayed.
I waited until a commercial to ask “are you doing okay?
He looked over at me and sighed. “I wonder when you were going to start” He was about to get up but I grabbed the arm of his favorite old black hoodie that had belonged to our dad.
“Don’t treat me like I'm just some stranger who’s nagging” I told him
“we need to talk” my voice came out a whisper.
He shook off my arm and looked at me for a moment. “Okay, Sam let’s talk” his voice sounded so tired and sad.
I took a deep breath and held it for four seconds before I let it out. “Have you thought about going back to college? Grandpa did leave plenty of money for us. You could use it to go back, ya know?”
He pulled one knee up to his chest. “I know but I’m not just gonna leave you all alone.”
“We’re both twenty, I can take care of myself. Plus Angel would be here with me.” I said with a small smile. “And you know how proud grandpa was when you got accepted.” I added.
“I know, but still….” He sound so sad, I wrapped my arms around him.
“Nothing gonna happen to me, just because you go away. Grandpa got sick, it wasn't your fault.” I said in a soft voice. “And even when you do go back to school, you can come back on holiday or weekends. We could make it work.” It was strange to be the strong one. Shelby was usually was the grown up.
He took a deep breath and unfolded himself. “if I go back then what are you gonna do here all alone, Sammy?”
